65Mn Spring Steel: The Complete Technical Guide

Published: Oct 22, 2026  |  Category: Spring Steel  |  Reading time: ~9 min

65Mn is one of the most widely used spring steels in the world — and especially in China, where it is the default grade for everything from light-vehicle leaf springs to band saw blades. If you are sourcing clips, washers, clutch springs or measuring tapes, you have almost certainly met it.

This guide pulls together everything a buyer or design engineer actually needs: what 65Mn is, its chemistry, mechanical and physical properties, how it is heat treated, which grades it can be swapped with, and — most usefully — how to specify it so you get a consistent, fatigue-resistant spring instead of a batch of rejects. All property values below are typical; for any production order the mill certificate is the binding document. Request a quote and we will confirm every value on the certificate, not on paper.

What Is 65Mn Spring Steel?

65Mn is a plain-carbon spring steel with roughly 0.65% carbon and about 1% manganese. The carbon is what makes it hardenable and springy; the manganese is the part that matters in practice. Manganese drives the carbon deeper into the section during quenching and nudges up the strength of the ferrite matrix. For a spring maker the result is simple: 65Mn strip and wire through-harden in oil, where a plain 1060 would need a water quench and would crack far more often.

That single property is why 65Mn became the Chinese workhorse. It is cheap, it is available in every form, and it behaves predictably in the heat-treat shop. It is not a high-alloy steel and it is not stainless — any part that sees rain, salt or humidity should be oiled, coated or phosphated. For the full grade data sheet, see our 65Mn spring steel grade page.

At a glance: 65Mn (GB/T 1222) ≈ AISI 1566, with 0.62–0.70% C and 0.90–1.20% Mn. Quenched-and-tempered tensile reaches 980–1270 MPa, working hardness 38–50 HRC.

Chemical Composition (GB/T 1222)

C Si Mn P max S max Cr max Ni max Cu max
0.62 – 0.70 0.17 – 0.37 0.90 – 1.20 0.035 0.035 0.25 0.30 0.25

Heat analysis is reported on the mill certificate for every heat lot. If your drawing calls for tighter sulfur or phosphorus than the standard, flag it at enquiry stage — ladle-refined heats usually meet it without a surcharge.

Mechanical Properties

Values below are typical for 65Mn after oil quenching from 810 to 830 °C and tempering near 450 °C. Exact numbers shift with section size and tempering temperature.

See also  Common Spring Steels and Their Uses
Condition Tensile Strength Yield Strength Elongation Hardness
Hot rolled, annealed ≥ 735 MPa ≥ 430 MPa ≥ 9 % ≤ 269 HB
Quenched & tempered 980 – 1270 MPa ≥ 785 MPa ≥ 8 % 38 – 50 HRC
Oil-tempered wire 1500 – 1900 MPa — — per size class
Tip: pick the temper, not the grade, to set hardness: ~450 °C temper gives the usual 40–45 HRC spring window; drop toward 350 °C for higher hardness and less toughness.

These cross-references are nominal — chemistries overlap but are not identical. For safety-critical springs, send us the required chemistry window or the original drawing and we will match it to a heat on the certificate rather than on paper.

Heat Treatment and Processing

65Mn is forgiving compared with high-alloy grades, but a few shop-floor rules decide whether a spring lives or fails:

  • Forging: heat slowly to ~800 °C, then up to 1050 – 1100 °C. Work above 850 °C and slow-cool after forging to avoid cracks.
  • Annealing: 780 – 840 °C, soak, then furnace cool at ≤ 20 °C/h. Delivers ≤ 269 HB for forming and machining.
  • Quenching: 810 – 830 °C, oil. Thin strip may be austempered where distortion matters.
  • Tempering: 350 – 550 °C by required hardness; ~450 °C gives the usual spring window of 40 – 45 HRC.
  • Stress relieving: formed springs at 250 – 350 °C for 30 – 60 min, air cool, after coiling or bending and before finish sizing.
One caution from the shop floor: a decarburized surface layer kills fatigue life in spring strip. We control decarb depth per GB/T 224 on strip orders and can supply decarb-free (ground) strip for high-cycle springs.

Supply Forms and How to Choose

Every form is available annealed (for further forming and machining) or hardened and tempered to your hardness window. The form you pick usually follows from how the spring is made:

Form Condition Size Range Typical Use
Cold-drawn wire Annealed / oil-tempered 0.1 – 13 mm diameter Coil springs, clips, tire bead wire
Hardened & tempered strip Q&T, edge dressed 0.1 – 4 mm thick, width to 600 mm Washers, saw blades, measuring tapes
Hot-rolled plate Hot rolled / normalized 3 – 60 mm thick Leaf springs, wear plates
Round / flat bar Hot rolled / cold drawn 10 – 120 mm Forged springs, machined parts

Applications of 65Mn

65Mn shows up wherever a cheap, reliable spring is needed:

  • Light-vehicle & trailer leaf springs — the classic use. Hot-rolled plate is cut, punched, cambered and heat treated; 65Mn carries the stroke loads at low cost.
  • Spring washers & retaining rings — hardened-and-tempered strip keeps a consistent set after stamping; 40 – 46 HRC is typical.
  • Band saw blades & knives — strip at 44 – 50 HRC takes and holds an edge; the Mn keeps thin sections from cracking in quench.
  • Clutch & damper springs — oil-tempered wire gives the fatigue life needed at moderate temperature and price.
  • Measuring tapes & rules — thin strip with tight thickness tolerance and controlled decarb for a uniform temper colour.
  • Agricultural tillage tools — S-tines and sweeps from 65Mn bar survive stony soil better than plain medium-carbon grades.

65Mn vs Alternative Spring Steels

65Mn is the value choice, but it is not always the right one. Use the table to decide when to step up:

Grade vs 65Mn Choose It When
65Mn — Cost matters and sections are small-to-medium; the workhorse for strip, wire and light leaf springs.
60Si2MnA Higher Si raises elastic limit and heat resistance Heavier leaf springs or higher stress than 65Mn is rated for.
50CrV4 Cr+V improves toughness, fatigue and temper resistance High-cycle valve springs, or parts running above ~120 °C.
SUP9 / 55Cr3 Higher hardenability for thick sections Heavy-vehicle leaf springs where oil quench must fully harden 20 mm+ plate.
9260 Si-Mn, very high elastic limit Large leaf and coil springs at lower cost than Cr-V grades.
6150 Cr-V, AISI equivalent of 50CrV4 North-American specs calling out AISI 6150 valve/torsion springs.
Rule of thumb: stay on 65Mn for low-cost strip, wire and light leaf springs. Step up to 50CrV4 or SUP9 only when you need high-cycle fatigue life, warm-service temper resistance, or an oil quench that must fully harden thick plate.

How to Specify 65Mn for Your Project

A good enquiry saves both sides time. When you ask for 65Mn, give us:

  1. Form and size — wire diameter, strip thickness × width, plate thickness, or bar diameter. Tolerance standard (EN / ASTM / JIS / your drawing).
  2. Condition — annealed for you to form, or hardened-and-tempered to a hardness window (e.g. 42 – 46 HRC).
  3. Standard and chemistry limits — GB/T 1222 by default; tighter P/S or a specific heat analysis if the part is safety-critical.
  4. Surface requirement — decarburization depth (GB/T 224) for high-cycle springs, or ground (decarburization-free) strip.
  5. Certificate and inspection — EN 10204 3.1 as standard; add UT, MPI or third-party (SGS / BV) if needed.
  6. Quantity and port — mill lots usually start at 500 kg per item; trial sizes of wire and strip are often from stock.
Send the drawing or the required chemistry window rather than just a grade name. We match it to a heat on the certificate, which is what actually keeps your springs consistent batch to batch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 65Mn spring steel equivalent to?

Nominally AISI/SAE 1566; also close to JIS SUP9 and DIN 65Mn4. The chemistries are similar but not identical — confirm against the mill certificate for critical parts.

Can 65Mn be hardened?

Yes. Oil quench from 810 to 830 °C, then temper at 350 to 550 °C. Working hardness lands between 38 and 50 HRC depending on the temper.

What is the difference between 65Mn and 1060?

The manganese. The 0.90 – 1.20% Mn in 65Mn lifts hardenability, so thin strip hardens fully in oil where 1060 needs water and cracks far more easily.

Is 65Mn good for knives and saw blades?

It is widely used for band saw blades and knives — good edge, tough enough to resist chipping. It will rust, so keep it oiled or coated.

65Mn vs 50CrV4 — which should I use?

For light, low-cost strip and wire springs, 65Mn. For high-cycle valve springs or parts running warm, step up to 50CrV4, whose Cr+V additions lift fatigue life and temper resistance.

What is the minimum order quantity?

Mill lots typically start at 500 kg per item; trial quantities of wire and strip are often available from stock. We confirm cost and delivery within one working day.

Key takeaways: 65Mn is the cost-effective, oil-hardening Chinese spring-steel workhorse for strip, wire and light leaf springs. Specify the form, condition and decarb requirement up front, and confirm cross-grade substitutes against the mill certificate — not the grade name alone.
