High-speed steel plate is supplied for large special tools, saw blanks, broach and cutter bodies and die sections. We stock M2, M35 and M42, annealed or pre-machined, and cut it to blank.
What Is High-Speed Steel Plate?
High-speed steel plate is rolled or forged to thick section and supplied annealed so it can be machined into large cutting tools and die sections. Thick HSS plate is used where a big, wear-resistant, red-hard tool body is needed — saw blanks, broach bodies and special cutters.
We keep M2, M35 and M42 as plate and cut sawn or milled blanks to your drawing.
High-Speed Steel Grades Available as Plate
These high-speed grades are available as plate:
| Grade | Standard | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| M2 | ASTM A600, EN ISO 4957 | General turning, milling and drilling tools |
| M35 | ASTM A600, EN ISO 4957 | Cobalt grade for harder cutting |
| M42 | ASTM A600, EN ISO 4957 | Max red-hardness, aerospace & hard alloys |
Size Range and Tolerances
Plate is cut from 6 mm up to 100 mm. Size and tolerance are confirmed per order:
| Thickness | Width | Length | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 – 20 mm | ≤ 600 mm | ≤ 1500 mm | Annealed |
| 20 – 50 mm | ≤ 800 mm | ≤ 2000 mm | Annealed / Forged |
| 50 – 100 mm | ≤ 800 mm | ≤ 2000 mm | Forged / Annealed |
| Cut blanks | per drawing | per drawing | Sawn / Milled |
Surface Finish and Delivery Condition
Plate delivery conditions:
As-rolled plate for machining.
Forged thick plate for sound centres.
Surface-milled to remove decarburisation.
Ground plate for close-tolerance blanks.

Applications of High-Speed Steel Plate
Large circular and band-saw plate blanks.
Thick plate machined into broach blanks.
Wear-resistant HSS die inserts.
One-off and low-volume tool bodies.
Thick HSS plates as wear faces.
Shaped plate for special cutters.
Quality Control and Mill Certificates
Every Plate order ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate covering heat chemical analysis and the mechanical and dimensional checks on record. We add, on request: ultrasonic or magnetic-particle inspection, hardness mapping, straightness and flatness checks, decarburisation or surface-depth checks, and third-party inspection (SGS / BV) at the mill or before loading. Dimensions are verified to the relevant EN / ASTM / JIS standard or your drawing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the thickest HSS plate you supply?
Up to 100 mm as rolled/forged, larger block on request.
Do you cut plate to blank?
Yes — sawn or milled to drawing with hardness check.
Which grade for a saw blank?
M2 for general saws; M42 where the hardest edge is needed.
Is the plate annealed?
Annealed as standard, ready for machining and hardening.
Do you stock M35 plate?
Yes — M35 cobalt plate for harder-cutting large tools.
